I made this move before I made it my job.
I'm Carissa Trent — REALTOR®, mom of four, and a transplant who picked Hendersonville on purpose. Six years in real estate, most of it on the investment side, and now almost all of it helping families land well in Middle Tennessee.
The drive
The movers came a day too late. So I loaded the car and drove down from the Chicago area myself — four kids, a dog and a cat, several hundred miles, one adult. It is not the version of the story I would have chosen, and it is the reason I understand what the week before a move actually feels like: the logistics are loud, but what keeps you up is the decisions you can't undo.
We didn't leave because of one thing. It was the property tax bill, and the state income tax, and the grey stretch from October to March, and shoveling a path to the bus stop at five in the morning before scraping the windshield to get to work. Life doesn't slow down when there are feet of dirty snow on the ground — it just gets harder. Eventually the math and the weather stopped being separate complaints and became one decision.
I chose where to land in Middle Tennessee by researching school zones — not neighborhoods, not listings, school zones — and working outward from there. That is still how I start with relocating families, because it is still the constraint that quietly decides everything else.
What surprised me once I got here: the lake is a personality trait in this county, and fifteen miles does not mean fifteen minutes. Nobody warns you about either one.
The inspection period is sacred
I have never asked a client to waive one and I never will, no matter how competitive the market gets. There are other ways to win a house.
Price it right on day one
I would rather lose a listing than win it with a number I can't defend. The market corrects optimistic pricing publicly and expensively.
Tell you the inconvenient version
Including when the house is wrong, the timing is wrong, or the town you've fixed on isn't the one that fits your family.
When I'm not working
I'm on a sideline. With four kids, fall means baseball, flag football and volleyball in some combination, plus guitar practice somewhere in the gaps. It's chaotic and it's the entire reason we moved — so I try not to complain about it.
That schedule is also why I'm honest with clients about what a commute costs. Twenty extra minutes each way is not an abstraction when someone has to be at a 5:30 practice.
